Fuel Surcharge Record Per Mile 2026: $1.01 on Flatbed

Récord de fuel surcharge por milla 2026: $1.01 en flatbed

Por Sultan Freight Editorial6 min de lectura

The fuel surcharge record per mile 2026 is now official. DAT Freight & Analytics reported on October 13 that September's average fuel surcharge hit 84 cents a mile on dry van, 92 cents on reefer and $1.01 on flatbed, the highest ever recorded, while on-highway diesel averaged $6.291 a gallon, the first monthly average above $6. For Northeast carriers running NJ/NY lanes, the question is simple: does the rate on your confirmation still cover what you burn?

Fuel surcharge record per mile: the DAT numbers

Here is September 2026 against the previous record, set in June 2022. All figures are national averages per mile from DAT.

EquipmentSpot rate (total)Spot linehaul (no fuel)Fuel surcharge Sept 2026Prior record (Jun 2022)
Dry van$3.01$2.17$0.84$0.75
Reefer$3.62$2.70$0.92$0.82
Flatbed$3.61$2.60$1.01$0.90

Fuel now makes up roughly 28% of the average van spot rate, 25% of reefer and 28% of flatbed. The reefer spot average of $3.62 is also an all-time high, above the $3.60 set in January 2022.

"Rates usually take three to four weeks to catch up with rising diesel prices." — Dean Croke, principal industry analyst, DAT

Why a record fuel surcharge is not a raise

Read the linehaul column again. Compared with August, van linehaul slipped 2 cents, flatbed linehaul fell 10 cents, and only reefer rose (9 cents). Most of September's rate increase was diesel passing through, not carriers earning more for the work itself. Volume is soft too: DAT's Truckload Volume Index was down year over year on van (-1%), reefer (-10%) and flatbed (-7%).

Meanwhile your costs moved first. DAT's own example: a truck running 500 miles a day at 6 mpg spent about $524 a day on fuel in September, versus $310 in February. That is $214 more per day, about $1,070 more per five-day week. At 6 mpg, fuel alone now costs about $1.05 per mile, up from $0.62.

What it means for NJ/NY box truck and dry van runs

Short Northeast runs feel this differently than long hauls. On a 250-mile run, fuel at September's price is about $262; at February's price it was about $155. That $107 swing lands on a single load, before tolls and deadhead. Regional diesel in the Northeast can also differ from the national average, so check the weekly EIA regional price rather than assuming the national figure is what you paid at the pump.

Test your own rate: fuel cost per mile at $6.29 diesel

The math is one line: diesel price divided by your real miles per gallon. Using September's $6.291 average, here is what fuel costs at different mpg, and what it adds up to over a 2,500-mile week.

Your real mpgFuel cost per mileFuel per 2,500-mile week
5.5 mpg$1.14$2,860
6.0 mpg$1.05$2,621
6.5 mpg$0.97$2,420
7.0 mpg$0.90$2,247

A half-mile-per-gallon difference is worth roughly $200 a week at today's price. If a broker offers a flat $2.00 per mile all-in on a 6 mpg truck, fuel alone eats about 52% of it before tires, insurance, tolls or your own pay.

Contract rates tell the same story. DAT's September contract averages were $3.24 for van, $3.58 for reefer and $4.04 for flatbed, with reefer and flatbed contract rates at records. Van contract ($3.24) now sits 23 cents above van spot ($3.01), so locking a lane is not automatically the worse deal this month. The point is to compare what you are offered against your own cost per mile, not against last quarter's rates.

Four checks before you accept a load

  • Is it all-in or linehaul plus surcharge? If the confirmation says "fuel included," divide it back out and compare against about $1.05 per mile of fuel at 6 mpg.
  • Which index sets the surcharge? Ask whether it uses the current weekly DOE price or last week's, and what base price it starts from.
  • Does it adjust weekly? With diesel moving 20-30 cents in a week, a flat surcharge on a multi-week contract can quietly shrink your margin.
  • Is your own cost per mile current? Recompute with this month's diesel and your real mpg, not the spec sheet.

What to say when a broker quotes last month's rate

You do not need a speech, just numbers. Say your fuel cost per mile at today's diesel, say the linehaul you need on top of it, and ask for the fuel to move with the weekly index. Brokers are watching the same DAT data: when rates take three to four weeks to catch up with diesel, the carrier who waits for the market to correct is the one funding the gap. If a lane will not move, shorten the commitment instead of arguing the number, a one-load agreement costs you less than a month at an old rate.

For Northeast owner-operators and box truck fleets, the same logic applies to detention and deadhead: price them in, because fuel makes every empty mile more expensive than it was in the winter. A load that looked fine at $3.72 diesel can lose money at $6.29.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fuel surcharge record per mile in 2026?

Per DAT, September 2026 averages were 84 cents (dry van), 92 cents (reefer) and $1.01 (flatbed), all records.

Does a record surcharge mean higher pay?

No. Linehaul was flat or lower for van and flatbed in September. What matters is whether your negotiated rate covers your higher fuel bill.
